ABHYANGA: is Ayurveda's full body massage.  Distinct pungent oils contain antioxidants whose potency is increased when the oil is heated to match the client's body temperature.  The warm medicated oils, blended with gram flour, penetrate the pores of the skin which can loosen impurities and toxins.

The effect of using these oils can strengthen the 13 agnis (digestive fibres), purify the intestines, remove ama (toxins) from the dhatus (skin layers) such that the dhatus can become rejuvenated, and strengthens the senses, which can prevent ageing and can give longevity to health.

ACUPUNCTURE: is an ancient system of medicine from the East that dates back over 4000 years. It was found that stimulation of specific areas on the skin affected the functioning of various organs. There are at least 365 acupuncture points that lie under the skin and are spread over the body. They lie within meridians or energy lines which encircle the body and penetrate the organs. An intrinsic energy, qi, ki, or chi is distributed through the meridians. Its blockage, under or over activity, is ultimately responsible for disease and may occur as a result of life stresses, overwork, bad posture, poor diet or excess emotion such as anger.

Western acupuncture uses the same needling technique but is based on affecting nerve impulses and the central nervous system.

Diagnosis involves an acupuncturist understanding a person's individual lifestyle, nutrition, medical history and so on.  The diagnosis will establish which pathways require some adjustment in order for health to improve.

Acupuncture may also be used as an anaesthetic agent, painkiller and to combat nausea.

Treatment:

At your first consultation the acupuncturist will need to ask you questions about your general state of health to determine the likely causes of your problems.  The acupuncturist can then select the most appropriate treatment. The aim is to discover which energy channels need to be adjusted or treated for your specific complaint to improve.

There are approximately 500 recognised acupuncture points on the body and about 100 are most commonly used. Stimulation of specific areas on the skin affects the functioning of certain organs in the body. Interestingly, those areas may not be close to the part of the body where the problem is. An example is:-   although you may suffer from headaches, needles may be inserted in your foot or hand.

Acupuncture needles bear little resemblance to those used in injections and blood tests. They are much finer and are solid rather than hollow. When the needle is inserted, the sensation is often described as a dill ache or tingling.

If you are receiving treatment from your doctor then it makes sense to tell him or her about your plans to have acupuncture.

You should always tell your acupuncturist about any medication you are taking as this may affect your response to the acupuncture treatment.

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE:   This is a taught technique rather than a therapy. It is based on the theory that the way a person uses their body affects their general health. It encourages people to optimise their health by teaching them to stand, sit and move according to the body's natural design and function.

Frederick Mathias Alexander, an Australian, first introduced the Alexander technique in the late 19th century. He was a young actor troubled by vocal problems and noticed that when he stiffened his neck and pulled it back and downwards during recitals he depressed his larynx.  In his research he talks about the head, neck and back relationship being the primary controls and this he said was the main reflex of the body. If this relationship was interfered with by tension, for example, it could offset all the other reflexes within the body.  Hisapproach was an holistic one and he suggested that everyday fears were a big part of inner tension.

Problems treated:

: control hypertension,  : stiff neck,    : frozen shoulder,   : headaches and migraines,   : backaches,  : asthma,      :depression,   : breathing and voice quality.

A wide range of problems associated with bad posture may be alleviated by learning how to walk, stand, sit and lie down properly.

Treatment:

The Alexander technique can help by looking closely at an individual's everyday fears and anxieties. With practice of the Alexander technique one can experience a feeling of lengthening, expansion and ease in all movements. You can choose to make a change to improve posture and co-ordination with a resulting improved quality of life and peace of mind. The pupil is made aware of what he/she is doing and how it affects the neck torso relationship in both activity and rest. Lessons in the Alexander technique shows the need to change ones habitual pattern of movement and bearing.  The ideal situation would be education from an early age which would be the best form of prevention.
